Zac Efron revealed to Conan O’Brien last night that before he was such a hot celebrity that he had to carry condoms in his pocket, he didn’t have much game. To court the ladies, he relied on song and dance, literally donning a top hat and performing in a barbershop quartet. Well, we all know how the ladies can’t resist the mustached smile of a worthy gentleman flexing his a capella vocal muscles. SWOON.
Conan didn’t buy the strategy so he got Zac and his musical sidekick La Bamba to recreate the scene. The three men sang an a cappella version of the Beach Boys’ Barbara Ann, with Conan naturally doing the high part. It’s actually pretty good!
Would it work on you?

I can’t help it. Listening to the jibberish squeals of Gru’s minions as they try to sing the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann” makes me go “d’aww.”
The new trailer for the sequel to Steve Carell’s Despicable Me has three of the yellow aliens combining harmonies and the fourth playing the noisemaker.
But don’t get too excited. We still have to wait until 2013 until the movie is released.
Sadly, Kanye is not on this year’s WTF Grammy list, which has us wondering, is he taming down or saving his energy for something doubly shocking? Only time will tell. In the meantime, there were plenty of bewildering/confusing/awkward moments to tide us over.
1) No one knows who Bon Iver is. Really? This is like last year’s who the f**k is Arcade Fire moment. Bon Iver won best new artist, though he’s not exactly new on the scene. A new Twitter account has been created in recognition, called Who Is Bonnie Bear?
2) Nicki Minaj’s Grammy ensemble made her usual skin-bearing outfits look conservative. Minaj channeled her religious side, donning a red Versace Catholic-inspired robe. She had a Pope look-a-like escort her and later performed an exorcism on herself — not sure how her date felt about that part. We’re comparing this to Lady Gaga’s egg moment of last year.
3) The most ironic moment of the night goes to the Foo Fighter’s walking off the stage to LMFAO’s “Party Rock” after winning best rock performance. Grohl shouted “long live rock ‘n’ roll” as the electro pop song negated their point.
4) Coldplay got slack for his cracking voice. We all thought Adele was the one to worry about, what with her throat surgery and all, but apparently Chris Martin and Rihanna’s performance was not a favourite. Strangely, a Chipotle commercial aired right after the performance, featuring Coldplay’s music, prompting many to say the commercial represented an actual Coldplay performance. I don’t see the big deal! I don’t think his voice was that bad. Just me? Okay.
5) The Beach Boys reunion underwhelmed audiences. I hate to say it, but it kind of felt like a performance for a Florida retirement home. The California boys shared the stage with Maroon 5 and Foster the People. Foster the People has my vote as best of the three, though the band looked scared out of their minds.
Recordings by the Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, James Brown and the Doors are among the songs that have been named as the 2010 inductees to the Grammy Hall of Fame, reports rollingstone.com.
Twenty-five recordings from various genres will be added to the Hall, which currently includes 851 songs altogether. Songs are eligible 25 years after their release and the picks are all approved by Recording Academy Trustees. The Beach Boys’ “California Girls,” The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm,” and Janis Joplin’s final album Pearl are among the recordings added to the collection.
“This year’s Grammy Hall of Fame inductees highlight a diverse array of masterpiece recordings that have had a profound impact on our musical history,” said a statement by Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. “The selections are timeless staples that span six decades and represent a wide range of genres from comedy to rock, reggae, jazz and R&B. They all greatly deserve to be memorialized.”
Pop legends THE BEACH BOYS are set to reunite, after the surviving bandmembers ended their decades-long rift.
Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine went their separate ways in the 1980s, prompted by Wilson’s deteriorating health – caused by excessive drug use – and a spate of lawsuits over the rights to their music.
They reunited in 2006 for the 40th anniversary of their iconic album Pet Sounds – and Love is keen to create new music with Wilson and Jardine.
He tells Record Collector, “A reunion would have to begin with Brian and I writing together.
“As far as I’m concerned, I think the first step would be to create some new music, and the chemistry of Brian’s innate abilities and mine combined in such a way that we could really be of mutual benefit to each other, creatively.”

Feuding BEACH BOY MIKE LOVE and his former bandmate AL JARDINE are again taking their ongoing legal dispute over whether Jardine can use the group’s name to court.
On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge JAMES R DUNN rejected Love’s motion to rule in his favour over reclaiming costs. In September, Dunn allowed the musician to pursue $2 million in court costs and $1 million in earnings he claims Jardine wrongly earned for using the Beach Boys’ name.
However, on Tuesday Dunn ruled there is enough evidence for the still unresolved, long-running matter to go to trial, and ordered attorneys for both Love and Jardine to get in contact with him by the end of the month to discuss the status of the case.
Jardine’s lawyer LAURENCE NOBLE says, “The judge will then decide on a trial date, or if there should be mediation or additional motions. Hopefully, this case will go away and Al Jardine can focus on making his music for his fans and not fending off this litigation.”
In 2001, Jardine filed a $4 million lawsuit against Love and The Beach Boys’ Brother Records Inc, accusing Love of excluding him from performing with the band that year.
The complaint was eventually dismissed but Love sued Jardine in 2003 for using the name The Beach Boys in the title of his band AL JARDINE OF THE BEACH BOYS. The same year federal courts ordered Jardine to cease using the Beach Boys name in the title of his bands.
Love maintains only he has the legal right to perform under the band’s name.
