UPDATE: Lady Gaga cancelled her sold out show in Jakarta after Islamist hardliners threatened violence.
Lady Gaga is no stranger to controversy but she ruffled a whole lot of feathers earlier this week when Christian groups protested her concert in the Philippines. Now Islamic fundamentalists in Indonesia are doing the same thing.
The protesters in Jakarta say her dance moves and outfits corrupt youth and they’ve threatened violence if her concert goes on as planned (which, sorry, seems to go against their whole mission). In Manila Philippines, some Christians said Gaga’s song “Judas” was blasphemous and held signs that said “mother monster.”
Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and I respect that. Personally, I’ve always seen Lady Gaga as someone who encourages her fans to embrace their differences and actually celebrate them. As for the dance moves and flashy costumes, they’re artistry and usually have a purpose in her performances.
The Straits Times newspaper in Singapore reported that Gaga has no plans to tone down her act, even if that prevents her from performing in some countries. Her manager Troy Carter said she is not “provocative for the sake of being provocative.” What do you think?
