DD/MM/YYYY Arrested for Pillow Fight

While bands being arrested for trashing hotel rooms is nothing new, DD/MM/YYYY found themselves in a rather unique situation when they were arrested for having a pillow fight, according to CHARTattack.

The experimental rock band from Toronto were in Biloxi, Miss., where they were taking a day off between shows in Orlando and Baton Rouge, La. on Oct. 5 and 6.

According to the band’s guitarist/keyboardist/drummer/singer Tomas Del Balso, the band stayed at the Hard Rock Casino with These Arms Are Snakes. After DD/MM/YYYY were kicked out of the casino, they went back to their hotel room and took part in such an enormous pillow fight that the hotel staff told them to leave.

“After leaving, Mike [Claxton, bass/clarinet/vocals] drunkenly went back to the hotel trying to get [my] backpack which was left behind,” said Del Balso. “The hotel clerk gave him the key and everything but he couldn’t find it…afterwards the hotel casino guy saw Mike again and called the cops again.”

Del Balso then described the whirlwind that transpired.

“Mike left the area to a parking lot to let off steam but was picked up by police and handcuffed,” he said. “I thought mike was at the McDonald’s so I went there and smoked a cigarette. Four cop cars then roll up to the McDonald’s and arrested me too. Mike and I were brought to the Biloxi police station and they told us this charge was a misdemeanour and that would not affect our travelling to and from the states…we got put into a holding cell at 5 A.M. after getting our pockets emptied and my love necklace for my girlfriend cut off.”

Their bail was set at $500 U.S., but they could not reach anyone to pay the fine and get them out of jail.

“The cops told us that if we could not reach any one by around 12 o’clock noon we would be brought to the Mississippi county prison where we would be able to contact our embassy,” Del Balso said. “I stared at the prison wall for about five hours until my eyes where blurry and the details of other past prisoners’ feet and wall scratches were shifting and fuzzing.”

But the band mates were then saved by an unlikely hero. A man named Bobby was brought to their cell, and told them he was getting out before they were. He promised them he would find their other band mates and tell them where Del Balso and Claxton were.

“So he found our van, wrote a crazy letter and left it on our windshield until Jordan [Holmes, keyboards/guitars/vocals] and Moshe [Rozenberg, drums/keyboards/omnichord/vocals] woke up and found it. They got to the jail around 11, so we didn’t go to county jail. We were happy to be free and back on track.”

Soulja Boy Runs From The Law

Soulja Boy Tell’em is out of jail after spending the night behind bars on Wednesday, following his arrest on a charge of obstruction. According to mtvnews.com, the rapper (born DeAndre Way), was detained when Georgia police responded to a report of juveniles hanging out in an abandoned home on Wednesday night in the McDonough area of Atlanta.

According to Captain Jason Bolton of the Henry County Police, someone called in a report of individuals hanging out at an abandoned home. When officers arrived on the scene, they found around 40 people standing in a dark backyard behind the house.

“You couldn’t really tell what was going on,” Bolton said. “But about half of the group ran from the officer on foot. He ordered, of course, for them to stop. … There were several vehicles left at that location.”

While investigating the scene, the officer figured out that one of the people who fled was Soulja Boy, 19, who eventually returned to claim his white Range Rover, which was left at the house. Upon his return, the officer charged the rapper with one count of obstruction, a misdemeanor, for running from police when he’d been ordered to stop. The rapper was released on $550 bond on Thursday morning and a follow-up court date was not available at press time.

A spokesperson for Soulja Boy had no comment on the arrest at press time. It was unknown what video the rapper, who frequently posts viral videos on his Web site, was shooting before the incident.

Cast of Vampire Diaries Arrested

The new CW show, The Vampire Diaries, is host to some pretty wild antics by the cast and crew. The show that premiered yesterday has already encountered some off-set shenanigans.

According to perezhilton.com, several actresses from The Vampire Diaries and an accompanying photographer were booked for disorderly conduct last week for participating in a photo shoot that included hanging over the I-75 bridge at Rumble Road in Smarr, Georgia.

They were detained while authorities responded to the 911 calls of seven different motorists citing women in danger. Yet, one caller claims the ladies were flashing traffic down below.

Nina Dobreva, Candice Accola, Kayla Ewell, Krystal Vayda, Sara Canning and photog Tyler Schields were released from the Monroe County Jail the same day after each paying $1,000 bond.

On another note, an employee of the BP Food Mart nearby said the group came by and took some “fun kind of pictures” while straddling his store’s gas pumps.

Sham Wowed

This incident comes after just releasing a product known as the “Slap Chop.” I’m sorry if I’m the only one that sees some comedy in the situation. Apparently, he offered the prostitute one thousand dollars in exchange for sex. I wonder if he told her she would “be saying wow every time?” Ok, maybe this isn’t funny.

My real concern, however, is that recently I started using “Sham Wowed” as a colloquialism. For example, “I can’t believe that just happened. I think I just got sham wowed.” Is this something I need to eliminate from my vocabulary? Please discuss. I could really use your help on this one.

FBI Arrests DMX

Rapper DMX is currently in jail until he goes before a judge today (December 10). According to MTV News, a $5000 reward was offered for the rapper’s capture.

DMX was arrested on a warrant after he failed to appear in court last Friday.

Attorney Bradford Cohen explained to MTV News what happened, “A call went out earlier this morning in regards to his location, and the regular police went out to that location, which was a recovery clinic, but because of health care laws, the clinic wouldn’t confirm whether he was there.”

DMX was then apprehended by the FBI at a Palm Island mansion according to MTV News.

The American rapper was due in court last week for a status hearing on charges of drug possession, identity theft and animal cruelty.

Movie Review: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

I have mentioned before that I like studio films – good ones – but have also seen enough of them to recognize the off-the-shelf formulas, the test audience-driven elements, the ingredients calculated to elicit gasps, groans, cheers, arousal and – ideally – repeat business from various segments of moviegoers. Rare is the studio film that feels like its makers genuinely wanted to entertain you – most of them begin with a producer (or producers) deciding a given idea will attract a profitable audience, and everyone from the director on down making sure the resulting film does so. If moviegoers are lucky, it will be entertaining.

Independent movies, on the other hand, are made with a greater purpose in mind. Profit matters – always has, always will – but independent filmmakers know that art house audiences are after quality, not predictability, and that a good movie will typically yield good business.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is not an example of why I see independent movies.

You can feel the wheels of the screenplay turning from the moment the film opens. Every word that Nick (Michael Cera) speaks into his ex-girlfriend’s answering machine (which he erases before delivering) is for the benefit of the audience; each line at Norah’s (Kat Dennings) high school either establishes that A) she hates Nick’s ex (Alexis Dziena); B) is perfect for Nick; or C) has the sort of relationship with her friend Caroline (Ari Graynor) that will get one or both of them in trouble. To get Nick out of his New Jersey home and Norah from high school, their favourite independent band, Where’s Fluffy, announces a surprise concert which could be at any one of five (or more) locations. Nick’s band happens to be playing at the first location Norah visits. When Nick and Norah meet and decide they don’t like each other, Caroline, who’s now drunk, goes missing. And so on.

A public service announcement: the film contains one of the most gag-inducing running jokes in recent memory. A wad of gum, initially chewed by Caroline, is thrown up and lands in a used toilet at Penn station. With her bare hands (and the camera focused firmly on the toilet bowl and its tranluscent chocolate-coloured water), Caroline frees her gum from the murky depths and sticks it back into her mouth. She isn’t the last person to chew it either. I haven’t heard an audience collectively groan like that since the hair gel scene in There’s Something About Mary.

To be fair, the movie handles a pair of typically bungled elements especially well: that Cera’s bandmates are gay is established with a single line (”you don’t know what it’s like to be straight”), and instead of mining it for laughs, the film acknowledges their sexuality and moves on. Likewise, it’s clear none of the main characters are virgins, but their activities are neither exploited nor ignored; they’re simply acknowledged when needed and remain offstage when not.

The two leads are well cast. As Nick, Michael Cera may not look like the kind of guy who would command Kat Dennings’ attention during a concert, but in every other aspect he’s perfect. In her first lead role, Dennings (Catherine Keener’s daughter in The 40-Year-Old Virgin) handles herself admirably, wearing a tentative smile that suggests far more character development than the script does.

The problem is the long arm of the plot remains tangled in everything until the last half hour, at which point Nick and Norah are progressing smoothly, but without any surprises. The film is an unabashed crowd-pleaser, as engaging, warm-hearted – and calculated – as any studio-backed Oscar winner.

Ryan O’Neal and Son Arrested

They say the fruit never falls too far from the tree.

“They” are so right.

According to E! News, Ryan O’Neal and his son, Redmond, were arrested Wednesday at the actor’s home in Malibu. The pair was taken into custody for alleged drug possession.

“This morning, deputies were doing a routine sweep to make sure Redmond was adhering to his probation,” sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said. “Upon searching the premises, the younger O’Neal was found in possession of narcotics. Later, a vial of drugs were found in the elder O’Neal’s bedroom. We believe the drugs found were methamphetamines.”

Redmond has a history of drug abuse, having entered rehab in 2004 for heroin use.

Christian Bale in the Clear over Assault Allegations

Christian Bale is a free man.

According to E! News, “The Dark Knight” star will not face any charges in regard to his highly-publicized arrest on suspicion of assaulting his mother and sister last month.

“We can today confirm that we have advised the Metropolitan Police Service that the actor Christian Bale should not face any charges,” the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement. The CPS also said there was “insufficient evident to afford a realistic prospect of conviction” on the charges and that “the police have been advised that no further action should be taken against Mr. Bale.”

Bale has denied the allegations set against him. After the star was arrested and questioned, he was released by police on July 22.

‘40-Year-Old Virgin’ Actor Shelley Malil Arrested for Stabbing Ex-Girlfriend

Shelley Malil, who played one of Steve Carell’s co-workers in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend as many as 20 times.

TMZ reports that Malil, who also starred in the “Wassup” Budweiser commercials, attacked the woman in her home in San Diego, chasing her inside and outside the house. He was later apprehended at an Amtrak station.

The victim’s two children were in the house at the time of the attack. Her condition is unknown.

‘Hairspray’ Star and Father Arrested

Nikki Blonsky and her father were arrested on assault charges, reports E! News.

According to reports, the 19-year-old “Hairspray” star and her father were involved in an altercation with the family of former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Bianca Golden at the Providenciales International Airport in Turks and Caicos.

According to Sgt. Chase of the Turks and Caicos Islands Police Department, the argument involved a dispute over saved seats.

Nikki Blonsky was charged with assault and actual bodily harm as well as common assault, while her father Carl was charged on a count of inflicting grievous bodily harm. Bianca Golden was also charged with actual bodily harm and assault.

While Golden and Nikki Blonsky were freed on cash bail, Blonsky’s father is being held until Aug 8th.
