A portrait of Heath Ledger has been submitted for the 2008 Archibald Prize, Australia’s most prestigious award for portraiture.
The CBC reports that Vincent Fantauzzo painted Ledger just two months before his death. The painting features two mischievous versions of Ledger whispering in either ear of a more sombre version of himself.
Fantauzzo will find out if he won on Friday, but he already knows what he’ll be doing with the painting – he’s giving it to Ledger’s family.
“It seems only right, as we did the sitting at his mom’s house in Perth and she was very much a part of the process, making us tea and crumpets and watching from the sideline,” he told The Art Newspaper.
Fantauzzo described Ledger as “charismatic, witty, sarcastic and a lot of fun; very positive about the future.”
