A newly approved Alberta-based channel will give a new adulterated meaning to the phrase “Made in Canada.”

CBC is reporting that federal regulators have cleared a proposal by an Edmonton producer to launch Canada’s first adult television channel with an emphasis on Canadian content.

The channel, called Northern Peaks, would be a national, English-language pay television service. The CRTC granted the licence to Real Productions who are based in Sherwood Park, AB on Wednesday.

“A full 50 per cent of our content will be Canadian,” company president Shaun Donnelly told CBC. “Canadians love watching Canadian adult content,” he sad. “I think it’s the fantasy of it that it’s somebody you can actually run into in the grocery store.”

Donelly has plans to shoot and produce this Canadian adult content in the West, in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

“Probably between Edmonton and Calgary we’d do about 40 per cent of our Canadian content. Vancouver has always been a busy city for us. Even cities like Regina and Saskatoon, we go in and do productions there,” said Donelly.

The channel would consist of triple-X movies, reality shows and other shows with a “mature” theme.

The launch date for the channel is mid-to late-2009.
