Billboard Changes Rules

BillboardBillboard will now be including catalog releases when calculating the best-selling albums, which were previously decided based on record sales from the past 18 months, reports Perez Hilton. The Nov. 25 chart will be the first to reflect these changes.

Taylor Swift is the only artist who sold more albums this year than Michael Jackson. Rihanna previously held the record for digital songs, selling 9.9 million, but Swift, Jackson, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas have all broken that this year.

Theory of a Deadman Win at WCMAs

Theory of a DeadmanTheory of a Deadman won recording of the year for Scars and Souvenirs at the seventh annual Western Canadian Music Awards, reports CBC. The awards, held Sunday at the Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, featured 22 Western-Canadian artists nominated for 14 awards in different musical categories.

Marianas Trench’s Masterpiece Theatre won pop recording of the year, while Manitoba trio Doc Walker won country recording of the year. The band was also named group of the year last week at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Vancouver.

Celtic singer Loreena McKennitt received the Hall of Fame award.


Jessie James Makes Her Mark In The Country/Pop World

It’s all coming to a head with the impending release of James’s debut album via Mercury Records/Island Def Jam. Due in stores July 14, the album is a genre-hopping fusion of country, pop, rock and soul, driven by James’ powerhouse vocals. Lead single “Wanted” (co-written by “American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi) is already playing on more than 60 stations across the U.S., and its music video was featured by iTunes as a “Video of the Week” last month.

Kris Allen Wins American Idol

Kris AllenThe two hour finale of “American Idol Season 8” was filled with surprises, including an awards ceremony, special guests and duets.

But the ultimate surprise was left for the end: the crowning of the winner. Kris Allen who was deemed the “dark- horse contestant” and an “underdog” by some of the “Idol” judges emerged as the winner of season eight.

“It feels good, man, but Adam deserves this,”Allen said as he was crowned the “American Idol”. “I don’t know what to feel right now, this is crazy.”

Keith Urban Seeks Name For Webisode Series

Keith UrbanCountry superstar Keith Urban is asking fans to name his weekly webisode series, which debuted earlier this month.

The weekly installments, which air every Thursday, give fans a peek into Urban’s music career, including behind-the-scenes footage from his “Defying Gravity” promotional campaign and video from his recent six-city Verizon VIP Tour.

This week’s episode will focus on rehearsals for Urban’s “Escape Together World Tour,” which launches on May 7 in Connecticut. Each show on the 58-city trek will feature a huge supporting act: Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, Glen Campbell, Little Big Town or the Zac Brown Band.

Dylan, Nelson, Mellencamp Team Up For U.S. Ballpark Tour

Bob DylanBob Dylan will be joined by two very special guests when he embarks on an extensive tour of minor-league baseball parks this summer.

The rock icon has enlisted Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp for the 23-date U.S. trek, marking just the second time in 24 years that the three musicians have performed together.

The tour, which will forego major cities for smaller locales, kicks off in Sauget, IL on July 2 and wraps up in Stockton, California on Aug. 15.

Lilith Fair To Be Revived?

Girl Power could be back in a big way in 2010.

It seems that Lilith Fair, the all-female travelling music festival that ran from 1997 to 1999, is set to return next year. In a short Twitter post on Friday, Nettwerk CEO and founder Terry McBride wrote: “Lilith Fair 2010 here we come!!”

Taylor SwiftThe Country Music Television channel has announced the initial lineup of performers for its eighth annual awards show.

Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts and Toby Keith will be among the artists taking the stage at the gala on June 17.

No One’s Replacing Paula Abdul

Paula AbdulPaula Abdul’s contract with “American Idol” may be up by the end of this season, but that doesn’t mean anyone will be replacing her, including “Idol’s” new judge Kara DioGuardi.

“I don’t think anyone [can],” Abdul said to “Nightline” in an interview scheduled to air Thursday on ABC. “First of all, Kara says, ‘I could never replace you.’ ”

According to Abdul, she didn’t have much of a say regarding the addition of a fourth judge. “I just got out of the hospital this past August. I had three days to pack and go on the road [for 'Idol' auditions]. I found out on the way to the airport,” she told “Nightlife.”
