Attack of the Vodka Gummy Bears

Posted by Natalia Buia on October 17th, 2011

If you’ve got a bad case of the Mondays and want a little pep to your morning, nibble on some vodka gummy bears! Or not.

There’s been reports of high school students using the candy to get drunk according to a California school board. This dangerously delicious trend is surfacing all over North America.

“It’s kind of scary, because I like gummy bears, and I’m kind of scared because it’s something you have to really keep an eye on,” one student said in an interview.

While it’s understandable most parents and teachers want to prevent underage drinking, it’s cruel to forbid or ban one type of candy for the whole school.

Okay, we all know teens today love to drink and can do mean keg stands. But not every student has the intention of getting drunk before math class on these vodka bears. I’m sure Katy Perry’s gummy bear ring, seen above, is completely sober! Lay off the paranoia, folks, we’ve got bigger issues to deal with (you know, like learning to read and write!).

Panic At The Disco’s Brendon Urie Breaks Ankle Onstage

Posted by Christian Allaire on May 31st, 2011

‘Panic At The Disco’ frontman Brendon Urie broke his ankle onstage Sunday night, reports Billboard.

The lead singer apparently broke his ankle when he tried to climb back onstage after roaming through the crowd. The concert was held in in Pompano Beach, Fla.

The injury apparently didn’t phase Urie, though. The lead singer even took off his boot and showed the crowd his injury.

“There’s like a softball in my ankle,” he said, then grabbing his guitar to play the next song. Talk about dedication. He eventually got an ice pack for his ankle and wrapped it around his leg, though, hopping on one foot for the last bit of the show.

“Thank you to everyone who sang with us tonight at the show! Here’s how it ended for me,” Urie wrote on Twitter, then sharing a picture of his mangled ankle.

Check out the video below of the incident. It isn’t pretty.

Scarlett Johansson stands with Planned Parenthood in new PSA

Posted by Kimberly Rupnarain on April 10th, 2011

In a new Public Service Announcement posted by Planned Parenthood on YouTube, the stunning Scarlett Johansson urges viewers to join the petition in support of funding for the organization, after the United States House of Representatives passed a bill to eliminate $300 million in federal funding for women’s health care centers.

“The House passed a bill to eliminate our country’s family planning program and to stop Planned Parenthood health centers from receiving any federal money to provide life-saving preventative care,” the 26-year-old actress says. “That means no money for cervical cancer screenings and breast exams. No money for testing and treatment of STDs, not even testing for HIV. No money for birth control.”

Uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, April 7, the website has already removed the petition and replaced it with thank-you to concerned supporters.

“Late Friday night, Congress reached an agreement on the federal budget, and it did not include cuts to Planned Parenthood funding. Together, we have made our voices heard and Congress listened. Now the real fight begins.”

The website goes on to urge supporters to the donate to the cause, citing that the “extremists behind the efforts to bar Planned Parenthood health centers from federal funding… lost that fight — but they were able to use the budget fight to force new burdens on women seeking abortion services in Washington, DC. This victory for their anti-women’s health agenda, along with the fact that they came dangerously close to succeeding in their assault on Planned Parenthood, has surely emboldened them for future attacks.”

The  video, which was shared by such websites as UsMagazine online and the New York Daily News, no doubt picked up circulation due to Johansson’s star power. The one day response time to the petition just goes to show the power of celebrity influence.

Heidi Montag Undergoes 10 Surgeries in One Day

Posted by Angelina Irinici on January 29th, 2010

Spencer Pratt may slowly be showing a positive side when it comes to his relationship, or just with plastic surgery.  Pratt does not support, yet does not fully condone his wife, Heidi Montag’s decision to get head-to-toe plastic surgery that was estimated at around $30,000.

“Anytime I hinted that it might be a little much or if I just asked if she was sure, I even felt like I was crossing lines,” he told People. “I’m not in charge of what she does with any part of her body. I’m her husband – not her owner.”

After being married a year, Pratt still thinks Heidi is beautiful. “But everyone sees themselves differently when they look in the mirror,” he says. “Nobody truly understands how she feels except her. I may not be okay with things, but it’s not my call,” he said.

Obesity Rates on the Rise, Findings Report

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 6th, 2005

The Canadian government is stepping in to help combat obesity, following the latest release of findings from Statistics Canada.

According to the findings, obesity rates in Canada have doubled among adults; and even more frightening, these rates are tripling in children.

Health Minister Ujjal Dosangh issued this statement:

?Obesity is a very serious and complex issue that requires collaboration to address. We are committed to intensive action on an Integrated Strategy on Healthy Living and Chronic Disease.?

As most people are aware, serious health risks of being overweight include heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

In response to these issues, the government is working closely with the provinces and territories and other non-governmental organizations to promote healthier lifestyles.

One of the strategies is called Budget 2005, which is aimed to provide $300 million over the next five years to provide solutions by addressing the conditions that lead to unhealthy eating and physical inactivity.

This strategy targets all Canadians, from those who are healthy, to high risk and those already living with illness. It is the most current of national policies and programs to help eliminate obesity.

While we?re at it, let’s also work to eliminate those pesky McDonald?s radio commercials.

Study Shows Teenagers Embarrassed By Perspiration

Posted by Michael Levine on June 24th, 2005

The results of a survey released last week by Certain Dri show that more than 3 million teens between the age of 12 and 18, sweat uncontrollably or above normal amounts, while 14 million teens claim their perspiration is a problem. Statistics already show that as much as 3 per cent of the U.S. population is diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, which is when the body produces more sweat in various places on a person’s body.

“Perspiring is a normal body function, needed to regulate body temperature and keep us cool,” explains Michael Spigarelli, M.D., an adolescent medicine specialist and member of the Society of Adolescent Medicine. “In warmer weather, our body works harder to do this, usually resulting in more noticeable perspiration. Some teens produce more sweat than others, even in a cooler environment.”

“This excessive perspiration or perception of excessive perspiration can be harmful to self-confidence in adolescents and teens,” he adds.

The study revealed that 11 per cent – both male and female – say that the types of clothing worn is directly related to the amount of perspiration their body produces.

“Our bodies — particularly in hot weather — can lose up to a quart of fluid per day, but this is just the average for those individuals who have ‘normal’ perspiration,” explains David Bank, M.D., dermatologist and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, and medical consultant to Certain Dri(R) Antiperspirant Roll-On.

“Someone with excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, as it’s called, will perspire even more. For the millions of people (teens and adults) with this perspiration condition, the summer months and the skin-bearing wardrobes that come along with the season are a dreaded time.”

Dr. Bank suggests teens try some or all of the following techniques to help tame the sweat:

- Wear loose clothing
- Do not sit in direct sunlight
- Apply a cornstarch based body powder
- Participate in relaxation activities such as yoga
- Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle

More information regarding the survey and how to help fight excessive perspiration, visit http://www.certaindriteen.com/
