(andPOP) - David Cronenberg was the big winner this weekend as the Toronto International Film Festival came to a close.

On Saturday, the Canadian director took the Cadillac People’s Choice Award, voted by festival attendees, for his film Eastern Promises. The thriller stars Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts in a tale about a Russian mob family in London.

The film, which opened Friday in limited release in 15 North American theatres, was averaging almost $37,000 (U.S.) per screen on Sunday. In comparison, box-office leader The Brave One was pulling in just over $5,000 per screen.

The first runner-up for the TIFF People’s Choice award was a film directed by another Canadian, Jason Reitman’s Juno. The second runner-up was Body of War, a documentary by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro about a paralyzed Iraq war veteran-turned-political activist.
