- (Yahoo! 5/23/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Brian McKnight, Missy Elliott, Destiny's Child's Beyonce Knowles, and Timbaland were among the several noted songwriters and performers from the hip-hop and R&B communities who were honored Tuesday at the 18th Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.



McKnight, who was on hand to receive his plaque, was recognized for his song "Back At One." Destiny's Child's Knowles and Kelly Rowland received an award for co-writing the group's "Say My Name." Wyclef Jean was honored for co-writing Santana's "Maria Maria." Sisqo was awarded for assisting in the penning of "Thong Song." TLC's T-Boz received an award for writing "Unpretty." And Missy Elliott was recognized for her work on 702's hit "Where My Girls At." Additionally, the songwriters for Blaque's "Bring It All To Me" and Jennifer Lopez's "If You Had My Love" were also recognized.





Tom Waits received the evening's top honor--the ASCAP founders award. Savage Garden's Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones's song "I Knew I Loved You" was named song of the year. And Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson were named songwriters of the year for co-writing four songs for the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, and Celine Dion.
