(andPOP) - THE BEATLES' iconic album SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND is to be re-recorded by a host of modern acts, including OASIS, THE KILLERS and RAZORLIGHT.

Campaigning rocker BOB GELDOF is organising the project, which will mark the LP's 40th anniversary this year.

The tracks will be recorded at The Beatles' Abbey Road recording studios in London, using analogue equipment from the Fab Four's era.

Geldof is still recruiting acts to the project and hopes U2 will agree to record a track.

The album will be recorded by Grammy-winning Beatles engineer GEOFF EMERICK and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 later this year.

Radio 2 controller LESLEY DOUGLAS says, "This will be not only a unique radio event but a very special musical moment."
