(andPOP) - MICHAEL JACKSON has turned to the words of famous English author CHARLES DICKENS to describe his love/hate relationship with the entertainment industry.

The superstar, 48, quoted Dickens’ opening line from his novel A TALES OF TWO CITIES, at a “fan appreciation” dinner party in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday night.

Guests had paid 400,000 yen ($3,500) to attend the dinner, which included a performance by Japanese Jackson impersonators and a photo session with the THRILLER singer himself.

Jackson did not perform at the event, but spoke of his determination to lead a happy life following his child molestation trial two years ago.

He said, “I’ve been in the entertainment industry since I was six years old. As Charles Dickens says, ‘It’s been the best of times, the worst of times.’ But I would not change my career.

“While some have made deliberate attempts to hurt me, I take it in stride because I have a loving family, a strong faith and wonderful friends and fans who have, and continue, to support me.

“Japan is one of my favourite places to visit in the world. I want to thank all of you for making me the biggest-selling artist in Japan.”
