(andPOP) - "The Grudge 2" brought celluloid evil to the top of the box office this weekend, beating Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" by a mere $2 million U.S.

E! Online reports that the horror flick, starring original lead Sarah Michelle Gellar alongside new addition Amber Tamblyn, brought in $20.8 million from Friday through Sunday.

The cash allowed Sony to make back the film's production costs, though its success didn't come close to rivaling that of the orignal. The 2004 film made almost $40 million over its debut weekend.

An all-star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson couldn't keep "The Departed" on top, as it slipped into second place after debuting at no. 1.

Robin Williams' new political comedy, "Man of the Year," had a disappointing opening weekend, taking in just $12.3 million.
