(andPOP) - Duane Chapman, best known as the star of A&E's "Dog the Bounty Hunter," is working on an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office that would keep him out of jail, south of the U.S. border.

Chapman is facing extradition to Mexico for wrongfully arresting a fugitive rapist, Max Factor heir Andrew Luster. The 2003 arrest allegedly violated Mexico's anti-bounty-hunting laws.

Along with his son Leland, 29, and unrelated partney Timothy Chapman, 41, the 53-year-old Dog faces charges of illegal detention and conspiracy. The three were arrested on September 14 by U.S. marshals, but were released on $300,000 U.S. bail after spending the night in prison.

According to Chapman's attorney, Brook Hart, the TV star is offering to make a public apology, pay a sizeable fine and make a large charitable donation to clear his name.

Hart says that Chapman and co. chased down Luster in Mexico after receiving "flawed legal advice."

Luster was returned to California and is currently serving a 124-year jail sentence for sexually assaulting three women.
