Add the andPOP Facebook Application(andPOP) - After 42 years on the air, British TV music program Top of the Pops had its last broadcast on Sunday night.
The one-hour finale on the BBC looked back over the show's most memorable moments, reports the CBC.
The show was a weekly countdown of the top 10 pop hits currently on the charts. In June, it was announced that the show was being cancelled, as it couldn't keep up with 24-hour music networks.
The show opened with a throwback to its original 1964 debut; Sir Jimmy Savile launched the broadcast wearing a bright gold tracksuit.
The finale also featured clips of performances by The Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Robbie Williams and the Jacksons.
Performers throughout the show's run included pop greats like Elvis Presley, ABBA and Madonna. When its popularity peaked in the 1970s, nearly 15 million viewers were tuning in each week.
The last song appearing on the show was Shakira's "Don't Stop Me Now," the week's number one song.
The show ended with Savile giving his regular sign off from the program's heydey: "Don't forget it's number one, it's still Top of the Pops."
