Add the andPOP Facebook Application(andPOP) - Matt Mays & El Torpedo were the big winners at Monday?s East Coast Music Awards, scooping up four awards at the Charlottetown ceremony.
The Nova Scotia band won for best group, best single for their song ?Cocaine Cowgirl? and best rock recording and best album for their self-titled album, reports CBC News.
"We want to thank everybody who's ever given us money because it's an expensive thing - government, parentment," Mays told the crowd after receiving his first award of the night.
Joel Plaskett was another multiple-award winner, taking two honours for male artist of the year and songwriter of the year for his song ?Happen Now,? from his album La De Da.
"I wrote Happen Now on my father's tenor guitar so I have to thank him for buying it," said Plaskett, who also thanked his band, the Emergency.
The annual celebration of Atlantic Canadian music saw both established artists and up-and-comers taking the stage at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Performers included Matt Mays & El Torpedo, country singer George Canyon, folk recording winner J.P. Cormier with blues guitarist Matt Andersen, francophone singer Christian "Kit" Goguen, P.E.I.?s The Chucky Danger Band and The Novaks.
The Novaks also won the Galaxie Rising Star Award. The Newfoundland quartet thanked Matt Mays and The Trews for "teaching us how to tour."
Celtic singer Mary Jane Lamond won two awards, female artist of the year and roots/traditional solo recording of the year for ?Storas,? while Canyon won the fan-voted entertainer of the year trophy.
"These things always get me so emotional," Canyon said. "This is such a huge honour. My hat's off once again to my fans for allowing me to stay in this business."
Nova Scotia was the big winner of the night, with musicians between the mainland and Cape Breton winning a total of 21 awards.
Cape Breton fiddle legend Buddy MacMaster won the ECMA Lifetime Achievement Award, while Halifax-born singer Sarah McLachlan was honoured with a video highlight package. Mclachlan was presented with the Director's Special Achievement Award last June.
The nationally-broadcast show was hosted by Julian (John Paul Tremblay), Ricky (Robb Wells) and Bubbles (Mike Smith), collectively known as TV's Trailer Park Boys.
