(andPOP) - The Grammy nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles, and included the expected, a surprise, and a snub.

First the expected: Mariah Carey, who has the second highest selling album of the year, was nominated for eight awards, which tied her with Kanye West for the most nominations received this year.

Now the surprise: John Legend, Kanye's prot?g? of sorts, also received eight nominations, for his debut album.

Carey's "comeback album," "The Emancipation of Mimi," earned her an album of the year nomination. She'll compete against Paul McCartney, Gwen Stefani, U2 and Kanye West in that category.
