(andPOP) - Johnny Depp is outraged at how ex-girlfriend Kate Moss has been vilified by the media after a British paper published photos of the supermodel allegedly snorting cocaine.

"The first thing that went through my mind was I was concerned for her, hoping that she was OK and that she and her baby were OK," says Depp, 42, who dated Moss for four years until 1998.

"No. 2 was just being appalled and shocked at the kind of vicious attacks," Depp said in an interview Friday with a British morning TV show.

"She's super sharp, really smart and (has) got a great heart. She's a good mum, and she just happens to be human, and the press wouldn't allow that, and that's unforgivable."

Moss, 31, who recently left an American rehab clinic, has been reunited with her three-year-old daughter Lila Grace.

The British icon paid a heavy price for her drug controversy, losing several modelling contracts with high-end fashion companies such as Chanel and H&M. But she appears to be staging a comeback, landing a Vanity Fair cover shot and a new campaign for designer Roberto Cavalli.
