(andPOP) - There's nothing like an MTV awards show and the network is promising another hot show for this year's MTV Video Music Awards, returning to sizzling Miami, Fla., on August 28.

Nominations for the VMAs were announced today by MTV, along with all the over-the-top details for the ceremony, hosted this year by P. Diddy.

Green Day leads the nominees pack with eight nods in total, including Video of the Year, Best Group Video, and Viewer?s Choice for ?Boulevard of Broken Dreams;? while ?American Idiot? is in the running for Best Art Direction.

Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott followed with six nominations and U2 with five.

Vying for the night?s top honour against Green Day will be Coldplay ("Speed of Sound"), Kanye West ("Jesus Walks"), Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell ("Drop It Like It's Hot") and Stefani ("Hollaback Girl").

But watching to see who wins is only part of the fun.

Most viewers will agree that the VMAs? biggest draw isn?t the presentation of Moon Men, but the always wild performances and red carpet arrivals. This year, celebrities will show up at the American Airlines arena either on luxury yachts pulling in from beautiful Biscayne Bay or souped-up cars that will comprise an auto show on the red carpet.

As the stars arrive, they will take camera crews on tours of their rides, while viewers at home will inevitably experience a bit of car envy.

It will be hard to top Madonna?s headline-grabbing performance at the 2003 MTV VMAs where she locked lips with both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, but just-announced performers Green Day, Kanye West, and Kelly Clarkson will try to make cover pages of their own. In between, viewers can listen to music composed by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and hip-hop producer Lil Jon, marking the first time the awards show will be scored with original music.

"Every year we have to outdo ourselves and this year is no exception," said MTV President Christina Norman. And to set the 2005 show apart, Norman is promising water ? a lot of water. To go with the ceremony?s water theme, MTV swore to create the most elaborate water effects ever produced in an awards show by working with the same production company that erected the well-known fountain in front of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

More presenters and performers for the show will be announced in the coming weeks.
