Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Engaged; Publicity Stunt?

(andPOP) - Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are engaged, Cruise said at a press conference in Paris on Friday.

"Yes, I proposed to her," he said, ending weeks of getting asked, "so when are you going to propose to her?"

"It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all," Cruise said, as Holmes looked on from the audience, wearing a diamond ring on her finger. "Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman."

No wedding date has been set. The couple has been dating for seven weeks.

But some wonder if the whole relationship is a publicity stunt. Cruise, 42, has the blockbuster War of the Worlds movie coming out this month, and Holmes, 26, will see her movie, Batman Begins, open this week at number one.

Coincidence? Perhaps. Both Cruise and Holmes have been asked if their love is a sham, and of course, both denied it. The most unusual part about their relationship is not the 16-year age difference, but rather that they are both so open about it. Who will ever forget when Cruise acted like a bumbling fool on Oprah, jumping up and down like a kid trapped on a pogo stick? (Hopefully me.)

Late Thursday night, Holmes was asked if the two were engaged, and said they were not. She thought she was going to the Eiffel Tower for dinner with Cruise, but was surprised when he popped the question. It's a dream come true for Holmes, the former Dawson's Creek actress, who used to have a poster of Cruise up on her wall.

This will be Holmes' first marriage. She broke off an engagement to Chris Klein earlier this year. Cruise has been married twice before, to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.
