(andPOP) - People tune into the Grammys to be entertained. The awards are often secondary, which is why it is no surprise to learn that just 11 out of the over 100 awards are presented during the televised portion of the day-long event.

And if people tuned in to be entertained, they got what they asked for: theatrical performances, colourful acceptance speeches, and surprise wins. They also got the exact opposite. If they watched the red carpet show on E!, they got too much of Kathy Griffin, the worst thing to hit the red carpet since Bjork killed an animal and wore it as a gown.

The good
-Joss Stone gave a breakout performance in a tribute to Janis Joplin, instantly scoring new fans from those who had never heard of her before. She may become an even bigger star because of this performance, much like what happened to Shania Twain and Ricky Martin after their performances in recent years past.
-For a little while, it looked like Kanye West might be shut out, before picking up 3 trophies and giving an acceptance speech for all to remember. His performance minutes earlier with John Legend and the Blind Boys of Alabama had everyone gushing over its theatrical brilliance. The man should be an actor.
-Los Lonely Boys winning an award was refreshing. This is a group that was genuinely happy to be there, they were thrilled and surprised to win, and didn't stop smiling throughout the entire show. That's a totally different attitude than those people who expected to win, or who felt some awards were owed to them.
-Alicia Keys blew the audience away with her performance, then was even more impressive performing a tribute to Ray Charles with Jamie Foxx who held his own.

The bad
-One E!'s red carpet, Star Jones should have been more careful asking MC Hammer what he did with his Grammys. He says he puts them on a shelf, though the more likely story is he pawned them.
-Star Jones told Kathy Griffin "you have to see this slit." Please, never show us your slit again.
-Janet Reno should never be allowed on the red carpet. I expected she'd invite everyone to her basement for a party, but I think Will Ferrell has spoiled me.
-Lou Pearlman was on the red carpet. And you thought he died with the boyband craze.
-Aaron Carter was also working the red carpet. They seem to be letting anyone on.
-Anita Baker pulled a Janet Jackson on the red carpet, but I don't think we'll be seeing screencaps popping up online anytime soon.
-U2's performance- some thought it was moving; not being insensitive but it was pretty damn boring.
-How many times can the announcer say a "once in a lifetime moment" is coming up next? Answer: 3.
-Why were music videos being played when the winners won, causing viewers to miss the winners' reactions?

The Ugly
-The ugly is dedicated to one horrible lady: Kathy Griffin. She calls herself funny but even Kevin Costner's past three movies were funnier. Ok, unintentionally funny, but still.
-Here are a few things Griffin said while "interviewing" people on the carpet:
-to Paul Oakenfold: "Are you hoping for a free three whole punch from the Staples Center?" to which he replied, "Is that a drink?"
-to Modest Mouse: "what would you like to write a song about besides my rack?"
-to various people: "Who's your boo?"
-to Joss Stone, speaking about Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's performance: "Can you feel the manufactured excitement?" (Ok, even the unfunniest of people can score one good line)
-to Eve: "Are you upset Bob the Bachelor didn't get nominated?"
-to Lisa Marie Presley: "Can I have $20?"
-to Jamie O'Neil: "Does your dog go crazy listening to Macy Gray?" to which she replied, "Am I supposed to answer that?" No, don't encourage her.
-to Kanye West: "When Josh Groban sang You Raise Me Up, do you think he was talking about that?"
-to West: "What's your favourite dish at the Olive Garden?" West was not pleased.
-moral of the story: Fire Kathy Griffin.
