(andPOP) - After 40 years, Canadians, you finally have a new hockey anthem!
Canadian Gold-composed by Colin Oberst received the majority of the votes in a contest put on by CBC, The Hockey Night In Canada Anthem Challenge. Don Cherry announced on Saturday night, at the beginning of this year’s season.
Oberst, an elementary school teacher from Alberta, has been teaching music for the past 10 years. He is an avid music writer and is a member of an Edmonton-based band. He submitted a total of five compositions to the challenge.
As the first-place prize winner Oberst will receive $100,000 and half of the ongoing performance royalties, while the other half of the royalties will go to Canadian minor-league hockey.
In a news release from CBC.ca, Scott Moore, Executive Director of CBC sports said that, “We couldn’t be more pleased with the amount of interest the country has shown in the Anthem Challenge...Canadians really stepped up to the plate and demonstrated their passion for hockey and for Hockey Night in Canada.”
