(andPOP) - Rachel McAdams has been cast opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the London, Ont., native is taking on the role of the enigmatic Irene Adler, a character who appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1891 Holmes tale "A Scandal in Bohemia."

Although Adler only appears in that story, McAdams' character would return in any possible sequel to Ritchie's film, which is based on a forthcoming comic book by producer Lionel Wigram that reimagines Holmes as more of an adventurer.

As previously reported, Downey will play the titular sleuth.

The movie's star-studded cast is rounded out by Jude Law as Holmes' sidekick Watson and Mark Strong (Ritchie's upcoming "RocknRolla") as the main villain, Blackwood.

Shooting is set to begin next month for a 2010 release.

McAdams, 31, can currently be seen as an Iraq War veteran in "The Lucky Ones," which opened in theatres Friday. Her upcoming movies include "State of Play" with Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe and "The Time Traveler's Wife" with Eric Bana.
