(andPOP) - Sara Gilbert has joined "The Big Bang Theory" as a series regular, extending a partnership of sorts that began in the early '90s on "Roseanne."

Gilbert, who guest-starred on CBS' "Big Bang" for three episodes last season, will reprise her role as Leslie Winkle, the brainy colleague and on-and-off love interest of show protagonist Leonard Hofstadter, Ph.D.

Leonard is played by Johnny Galecki, who co-starred with Gilbert on the long-running ABC sitcom "Roseanne" as David Healy and Darlene Conner. On that series, the two also played an on-again, off-again couple over several seasons.

Gilbert scored two Emmy nominations for her work on "Roseanne" and has since appeared on such shows as "24," "Twins" and "ER."

"The Big Bang Theory," which also stars Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco, begins its second season on Sept. 22.
