According to the Hollywood Reporter, Pitt will play Lt. Aldo Raine, a Southern rebel who leads a band of Jewish-American soldiers as they fight the Nazis in German-occupied France.
The movie, which Tarantino also scripted, is based on a 1978 Italian film of the same name.
It marks Pitt and Tarantino's first time working together as actor and director, though Pitt had a small part in Tony Scott's 1989 movie "True Blood," which Tarantino penned.
Other well-known faces may soon be joining the cast of "Bastards." Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead") and Nastassja Kinski are in talks to play a British lieutenant and German actress, respectively, while B.J. Novak ("The Office"), David Krumholtz ("Numbers") and "Hostel" director Eli Roth are in discussions to play members of Pitt's rogue army.
The film, which is being made by the Weinstein Company and Universal Pictures, begins shooting in Germany in October.
It is expected to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009.
