The cult comic "Elfquest" is set to leap onto the big screen courtesy of Warner Bros., with "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" director Rawson Marshall Thurber at its helm.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Thurber will also write and produce the film adaptation of the Wendy and Richard Pini story, though it is not yet known whether the flick will be live action or animation.
"Elfquest" tells the story of the Wolfriders, a group of elves who seek others of their kind on the two-mooned planet Abode, while they battle and form allies with trolls and primitive humans.
The comic, which has been published by both DC Comics and Marvel, was initially self-published by the Pinis beginning in 1978, during which it attracted some controversy for what were considered intense depictions of battle and sexuality at the time.
Hollywood has made several unsuccessful attempts to turn the series into a movie or animated series over the years.
Thurber directed commercials before making his feature directing debut with 2004's Ben Stiller-starring "Dodgeball." More recently, he adapted Michael Chabon's novel "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh" for the big screen.
