Newman is a former chain-smoker. He is said to be receiving outpatient care from a hospital in Manhattan.

Newman and his wife, Oscar winner Joanna Woodward, have three daughters. The family is said to be devastated by the news.

The legendary actor is said to be keeping the extent of his illness under wraps. His rep has refused to comment on Newman's condition.

Newman retired from acting last May.
