(andPOP) - “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” struck big at the box office this weekend by becoming the second biggest Memorial Day movie opening ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

According to Paramount Pictures, the fourth instalment of the “Indiana Jones” series grossed an estimated $101 million from Friday to Sunday, plus $25 million from its opening Thursday and is expected to earn another $25 million on Monday.

“Indiana Jones’ did incredibly well for a film that comes 19 years after the previous instalment,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers LLC. Previously, the first three Indy movies took in a total of $1.2 billion worldwide.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” came in second with $23 million while “Iron Man” came in third with another $20.1 million, bringing the movie’s domestic total to $252.3 million.
