(andPOP) - James Marsters may soon be rocketing into outer space.

The "Buffy" star is in final negotiations to play astronaut Buzz Aldrin in "Moonshot," a made-for-TV movie about the Apollo 11 moon landing.

British network ITV plans to air the movie in July 2009 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the historic mission.

No decision has been made yet on who will play fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins.

"Moonshot," which will begin the story eleven days before the Apollo 11 launch, is set to begin principal photography June 3 in Lithuania.

The movie is budgeted at an estimated $5 million and will combine NASA footage, CGI and live action.

Marsters is best known for his role as Spike on the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spinoff show "Angel."

He has since had roles in "Smallville" and "Torchwood," and recently finished shooting the "Dragonball" movie, in which he plays the villainous Lord Piccolo.
