(andPOP) - Madonna might get to keep David Banda after all.

Malawi's government is supporting Madonna's adoption of little Banda, urging the High Court to formally approve it.

The pop star and husband Guy Ritchie began adoption proceedings for the 2-year-old in 2006. Banda, who was born in Malawi, has been living with the couple in London since then.

The adoption has been controversial because many thought the Material Mom was given special treatment. There are laws in Malawi that prevent non-citizens to adopt in the country.

Madonna was supposed to appear in court for the adoption hearing next week, but her lawyers have asked the court to move the date to the end of April.
