(andPOP) - Sony announced today that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will ship April 17th and will be available exclusively on the PS3.

Developed by Polyphony Digital Inc., GT 5 Prologue, a glorified demo for the upcoming Grand Turismo 5, will retail for $39.99 CDN on Blu-Ray Disk and will also be available via the Playstation store, a price was not mentioned for the download.

While Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will feature 60 “meticulously detailed vehicles” from a variety of manufacturers and will also support a series first, 16 player online races at an astounding 60 frames per second, it is still just a glorified demo.

“Gran Turismo 5 Prologue delivers the most realistic and technologically advanced racing experience on any platform," said Jeff Reese, director, software marketing, SCEA.

There has been much speculation as to how gamers will respond to Prologue, paying almost full price for what can seem like half a game may seem absurd to some, but for the hard core Grand Turismo fan it could be seen as a Godsend and a glimpse of good things to come. Only time will tell.
