Add the andPOP Facebook Application(andPOP) - Celebrity humanitarians may seem like an oxymoron to some but according to Reuters, Angelina Jolie is the real deal.
Jolie tops a Reuters AlertNet poll of celebrities who contribute to humanitarian causes around the world and have managed to gain attention for their charity work instead of partying and DUI arrests.
The mother-of-four and partner to fellow humanitarian Brad Pitt was followed on the list by U2’s Bono, an advocate for AIDS awareness in Africa. Desmond Tutu, Bill Clinton, Don Cheadle and Bill Gates were also acknowledged.
The poll also calls out the celebs who seem to be doing good for ulterior motives. Madonna came in at the top of the list of least respected celebrity humanitarians of 2007, CBC reports.
Claims that the legendary pop star used her celebrity status to gain special treatment during her adoption of a Malawian boy this year may be the cause for pollsters lack of respect.
Other least-respected celebrity do-gooders were Paris Hilton, Oprah Winfrey and Bob Geldof.
The difference between Jolie and the other famous philanthropists is that the star doesn’t travel with camera crews and does her best to dodge the paparazzi.
"Someone like Angelina Jolie comes across as having more integrity than some celebrities and a greater sense that she doesn't just do this for the publicity," the director of the Feinstein International Famine Centre at Tufts University told Reuters news service.
