We here at ANDPOP want to help you be trendsetters, introducing you to brand new (or just underrated) music to tell your friends about — yes, that was a Weeknd reference. We want you to be that person who says “I knew him/her before everyone else” — a “music hipster” if you will. EVERY THURSDAY, our aim is to bless your ears with the music that you’ve never heard, but will never stop listening to. This week, we’re shining a light on Troye Sivan.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa and raised in Perth, Australia, Troye Sivan first got the showbiz bug as an actor starring in The Spud franchise, then moved on to do a bit of modelling — all before turning his attention to music. Now at just 21 years old, he has easily become one of music’s fastest rising singer/songwriters in recent years.
Like many, Troye took his talents to YouTube where he started uploading a wide variety of videos ranging from online challenges to music covers. It would later be these exact videos that lead him to YouTube celebrity status – earning himself a legion of adoring fans and over 4 million subscribers who have watched him grow up right in front of them.
In 2014 he announced his signing with EMI, then released his EP’s TRXYE and WILD. A year later he dropped his debut album Blue Neighbourhood, along with singles “WILD,” “Talk Me Down” and “YOUTH.” Both EP’s landed the fifth position on Billboard’s Top 200, with his debut album reaching the number seven spot. He’s also gone on to win a handful of pretty noteworthy awards, including an EMA.
Through his music, Troye has been using his platform for good and has become an inspirational voice for those struggling with their identity — or just growing up in general. With his stunning lyrics, infectious sounds and being a big advocate of spreading love amongst his fanbase, it’s no wonder why Troye Sivan has found his way into so many hearts.
