On tonight’s episode of Jane the Virgin, there’s a special woman (who is no longer a girl) stopping by – Ms. Britney Spears. This marks one of first big guest star stints on the show that follows the sequence of events after (virgin) Jane is inseminated with someone’s baby (who is not her fiance). Ke$ha was a nice addition — but we didn’t realize how badly we needed to see Britney Spears spar with Jaime Camil’s Rogelio De La Vega
This won’t be the first time Britney has graced a sitcom. In fact, she’s appeared on two (or 3…) and has even been beneficial and a saviour to some shows she’s guested on. She arguably saved How I Met Your Mother with her guest-stint, bringing eyeballs to the then under appreciated show (so, do we blame her for that finale, or…?) and gave Glee one of its record-breaking episodes.
Now, hopefully, Britney will do the same with this critically lauded but low-rated Jane the Virgin (seriously guys, it’s so good).
Here are the 5 times Britney Spears did it again on TV:
5. Sabrina the Teenage Witch
There once was a girl named Sabrina and she had magical powers. Back in the days of ABC’s iconic TGIF lineup – which featured some of our faves like Boy Meets World, Sister, Sister, Family Matters and Full House – Britney found her way onto Sabrina the Teenage Witch, in a fun little cameo playing herself. Sabrina was supposed to go to a Britney Spears concert but couldn’t so Britney is magically brought to her – much to Britney’s confusion.
4. Will & Grace
When you think of a super conservative, right-wing talk-show host, you think of Britney Spears, right? Spears guest-starred on the eighth season of Will & Grace as Amber-Louise (of course) who becomes the new co-host of Jack Talk, Jack’s (Sean Hayes) talk show. Spears really lays it on thick for this appearance – that accent! – and it’s a fun one.
You can’t do an ode to Britney Spears without… Britney Spears. In the episode “Britney/Brittany,” Spears plays herself in a dream sequence when Brittany (played by Heather Morris) wakes up from her daze after having been put under at the dentist (John Stamos). Brit even plays the teacher in the performance of “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” I mean, we’ve all dreamt about being in a Britney Spears music video, so, we get it. This episode was watched by nearly 14 million people, making it one of the show’s most watched episodes.
2. The Simpsons
In Hollywood, you’re only legitimately famous once you’ve guest-starred on The Simpsons. Spears, once again, voiced herself in a small cameo on the long-running show, pictured in her then signature “Hit Me Baby One More Time” outfit: pigtails, sports-bra and track pants.
1. How I Met Your Mother
I wouldn’t say CBS owes the longevity and success of How I Met Your Mother to Britney Spears’ cameo, but… actually, yeah, it does. Even the show’s co-creators, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, think so! Prior to her appearance on the show, HIMYM was constantly on the bubble for CBS as it was a generally well-received yet under watched sitcom. Then boom went the Spears. B requested to be a guest-star on the show, playing Molly, an eccentric receptionist who went on a few dates with Barney, and gave the show it’s highest ratings ever at that point – and basically saved it. No big deal.
