ANDPOP Predicts the 2014 Emmys

Emmys

It has been one hell of a TV year. What was your favourite show? Mine was The Good Wife, you know, the show your mom watches – but we’ll get to that a little later. The 2014 Emmys are tonight and I am going to run down who should win, who will win and who is the dark horse. Let’s begin!

Drama Series

Who will win: Breaking Bad

Who should win: Breaking Bad

Dark horse: True Detective

I think Breaking Bad is a lock to take this award. It is the Emmys after all, so this kind of “upset” is something I doubt will happen but True Detective is obviously the dark horse and could surprise.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

Who will win: Robin Wright, House of Cards

Who should win: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Dark horse: Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex

Did you binge the latest season of House of Cards? Robin Wright has a standout episode in an otherwise uneven season – which might be the reason why I’m giving Juliana the edge. The latest season of The Good Wife was the best thing on TV this year and I don’t need to wait till the end of the year to say that. She also proved herself with every episode but Juliana has already won before, leaving an opportunity for Robin to take it….unless Lizzy Caplan surprises. Critics ate up the first season of Masters of Sex and the Emmys love a fresh face.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Who will win: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Who should win: Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Dark horse: Woody Harrelson, True Detective

Let me get this out of the way: I didn’t watch Breaking Bad. I mean, I tried but…and I know I’m alone on this, it’s just not my jam. But I understand the love for it (sort of) and the unanimous praise for it’s cast but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE JON HAMM AN EMMY.

Supporting Actor In A Drama

Who will win: Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

Who should win: Josh Charles, The Good Wife

Dark horse: No one

For Aaron Paul: see above. For Josh Charles: watch season 5 of The Good Wife. Why no dark horse? Because these are the only two who need to be mentioned.

Supporting Actress In A Drama

Who will win: Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

Who should win: Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

Dark Horse: Christina Baranski, The Good Wife

I have hopes that Hendricks would finally get recognized but I doubt that will happen. This year’s show is pretty much a lock for Gunn.

Comedy Series

Who will win: Orange Is The New Black

Who should win: Veep

Dark horse: Veep

Orange Is The New Black is too buzzy, too adored to not win…but so is Veep. I’d love for either to take down Modern Family, the reigning champ, but Veep deserves this more as it’s actually 100 per cent a comedy.

Lead Actor In A Comedy

Who will win: Louis C.K., Louie

Who should win: Louis C.K, Louie

Dark Horse: Louis C.K, Louie

Jim Parsons has won this award three years in a row. The first two wins were fine, cute even. That’s quite enough now, Parsons. I didn’t even like the last season of Louie but I just need that Parsons-reign to end.

Lead Actress In A Comedy

Who will win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Who should win: Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation

Dark horse: Taylor Schilling, Orange Is The New Black

Now, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won this award two years in a row but unlike Parsons, it’s totally deserved. If you watch Veep then you understand; she just kills it every single episode and if she won for a third year, I wouldn’t be mad, but let’s take a page from the Golden Globes and just give Amy Poehler the credit she is due. With that said, if OITNB loses Comedy Series, I could see it getting some love with Schilling. But this is the Emmys: Eddie Falco will probably win.

Supporting Actor In A Comedy

Who will win: Tony Hale, Veep

Who should win: Tony Hale, Veep

Dark horse: Adam Driver, Girls

For Tony Hale, what I said for Julia Louis-Dreyfus above applies to him as well; his work is just spectacular and unmatched by his current peers. But… Adam Driver is buzzy and he’s in the new Star Wars movie. Those two things really don’t connect but him winning would create headlines for days and that’s some good press. Just keep that in mind.

 Supporting Actress In A Comedy

Who will win: Allison Janney, Mom

Who should win: Kate Mulgrew, Orange Is The New Black

Dark horse: Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live

This is the most interesting one to me, because it could go either way. I think Mulgrew is more deserving of a win than Schilling (we all love Big Red and everyone hates Piper). Allison Janney is Allison Janney and the world and the Emmys love Allison Janney (and Mom is my guilty pleasure). But then there’s Kate McKinnon: no one in the real world knows her actual name yet but she’s the current female-standout on Saturday Night Live and it would be nice to see her win.
