I know, there were a lot of old people.
The MTV Movie Video Awards have always been largely about teen culture; who are they listening to, who are they currently obsessing over, what terrible fashion trend are we wearing these days. In other words, the older I get, the less celebrities my friends can actually recognize (as for men, I’m killing the “Name the Celebrity” category on Quiz Up).
At Sunday’s 2014 MTV VMAs, it was a different story. In fact, the show largely felt like a massive throwback to different moments of pop culture.
Here are just 8 throwback examples from Sunday’s broadcast.
Katy Perry and Riff Raff’s Matching Denim Outfits
Katy Perry and her date, rapper Riff Raff, paid homage to our very first OTP, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, with their very own matching denim outfits. Britney and JT infamously wore their original matching ensemble back in 2001 at the American Music Awards.
Gwen Stefani and Snoop Dogg Present the Best Female Video Award Together
Remember when Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” ruled the radio? We totally forgot until this unlikely duo appeared on stage together.
Taylor Swift’s Fringe Performance Outfit
Last night was more or less the Beyoncé show; not only was she present to receive MTV’s Michael Jackson Vanguard award, she also performed an 16-minute medley of her latest self-titled album. We’re not sure if if Taylor Swift’s swishy, silver performance outfit was supposed to be a tribute to Queen Bey but it did look like one of Beyoncé’s past looks.
Blue Ivy Carter
Remember when Beyoncé officially announced her pregnancy at the 2011 VMAs? Well, everything seems to have come full circle as Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé and Jay Z’s precious daughter, was on hand to tell her mommy “Good job!” and “Yay, mommy” in person.
The “Black Widow” Ballerinas
Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea’s performance of “Black Widow” wasn’t the first time hip hop and ballet have merged together. In fact, the ballerinas couldn’t help but remind of Julia Stiles in Save The Last Dance.
Before Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj, there was Jennifer Lopez and her butt. When it comes to showing off one’s assets, Jennifer Lopez was the queen.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ Onstage Slapstick Bit
These days, most people will recognize Jeff Daniels as the straight shooting news anchor, Will McAvoy, on the Aaron Sorkin HBO drama The Newsroom. So it might be a little hard to believe he was actually the Harry to Jim Carrey’s Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber all those years ago. Lo and behold, the two idiots are back for Dumb and Dumber To (no, that’s not a mistake) and they even tried to recreate the movie’s slapstick magic on the VMA stage on Sunday night.
5 Seconds of Summer
So we’re slightly stretching when it comes to this reference, but was anyone else reminded of pop punk’s good ol’ days when the new Australian four-piece performed their latest hit, “Amnesia”? We know, we know, Blink 182, Green Day and Fall Out Boy are all a little cheesy but the heart can’t help itself. It also saved us from talking about Maroon 5 and, subsequently, Adam Levine who really doesn’t need the publicity.
