In honour of the Canadian rom-com The F Word (titled What If in America) being released next week, here are five romantic comedies available to stream on Netflix Canada to get you prepared for one of the most charming films to come out this year!
The To Do List
About five people (including me) saw The To Do List when it was released last summer. The film stars Aubrey Plaza as Brandy Klark who makes of sexual activities to do before heading to college in the fall. While the film feels like a straight-to-DVD project at times, this silly movie is completely carried by Plaza, Bill Hader and the rest of the cast. It’s no Academy Award winner, but it’s a harmless, light movie that’s worth a watch.
There was a time in my life when my enemy was Olivia Wilde. Remember when it felt like she was in everything? Cowboys & Aliens, Tron: Legacy, The Change Up, In Time… it felt like they were trying to make her the next big thing and I wasn’t ready. Change is hard for me.
However, Drinking Buddies was different for me. It revolves around two co-workers at a brewery (Wilde and Jake Johnson) who spend their nights drinking and harmlessly flirting. One weekend away together with their partners proves who really belongs together. Drinking Buddies is more of the same from director Joe Swanberg (You’re Next) but it’s sweet and funny and hits the nail on the head when it comes to relationships and friendships.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
After the whole Veronica Mars-hoopla earlier this year, I rewatched Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Having seen it before becoming a fan of Veronica Mars, I watched it again thinking that I’d have a different appreciation for Kristen Bell in it. And, I did.
I forgot how good she is in this. Actually, how good the entire movie’s cast is. Forgetting Sarah Marshall revolves around Peter (Jason Segel) who takes a trip to Hawaii to get over his ex-girlfriend and super famous actress, Sarah (Bell). Too bad she’s on vacation in Hawaii too and at the same resort and with her new boyfriend (Russell Brand)! WHAT A TWIST! Cue the dramz! The whole cast is spectacular and it’s a very eccentric and over-the-top romantic comedy than we are accustomed to seeing.
Oh, Easy A. How I love you. Starring Emma Stone, the film surrounds a clean-cut high schooler who relies on classmates’ rumours about her being the school slut to advance her social and financial standing.
Not only is this film smart and witty, it’s also very self aware. A comedy that covers issues like slut-shaming, gossip and double standards, a lot can also be learned from this movie. (And plus, it EVEN features that infamous scene of Stone singing Natasha Bedingfield’s “Pocketful of Sunshine”)
Do I even need to go into why you need to watch Easy A? If you haven’t, what the hell have you been doing instead?
Sleepless In Seattle
This is most likely your mom’s favourite romantic comedy, but you should obviously watch it too. Because sometimes, moms have good taste too!
Sleepless In Seattle is about a recently widowed man’s son who calls a radio-talk-show in an attempt find his father a new partner. Hilarity and drama ensues, of course. After all, it WAS helmed by the late Nora Ephron, a legendary romantic-comedy director. As well, it also features a fantastic cast (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Rosie O’Donnell). Need I say more?
