Watching the new teaser trailer for Johnny Depp’s film Mortdecai feels a bit like déjà vu. If you’ve already seen Wes Anderson’s critically acclaimed The Grand Budapest Hotel earlier this year, then the look of this David Koepp-directed movie will appear strangely familiar…mustaches included!
That being said though, the plots for the films are different. While the latter follows the adventures of a hotel concierge trying to get away from being framed for a murder he did not commit, Mortdecai is instead about an art dealer (Depp) who searches for a stolen painting that’s reportedly linked to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
Given that Mr. Depp has had a string of poorly reviewed films in the last couple of years (The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows, among some of them), Mortdecai looks pretty promising as it has a pretty stellar cast that features the likes of Olivia Munn, Gwenyth Paltrow, Aubrey Plaza and Ewan McGregor. Adapted from The Mortdecai Trilogy written by Kyril Bonfiglioli, it also looks like this film is hoping to launch a franchise!
Here’s to hoping Depp revives his film career. We’re sure he doesn’t really need the money, but he’s too good of an actor to deserve any more box office bombs.
