Who says teens can’t rule the world? On Sunday night, it was all about them, as the 2014 Teen Choice Awards kicked off at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Hosted by Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Posey and Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland, the two announced that 165 million votes were cast online for the 16th annual awards, which honour the best in movies, television, music, comedy, sports, fashion and YouTube stars.

Filled with hilarious moments, reunions and sentimental speeches, here are five of our favourite highlights from the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

Demi Lovato and Cher Lloyd kill it on stage:

Kicking off the show on an empowering note, Demi Lovato and Cher Lloyd took the stage with their anti-bullying anthem “Really Don’t Care.”

Later on in the show, Lovato accepted the first surfboard award of the night for “Choice Song of the Summer.”

“Thank you guys so much, this is amazing, and I dedicate this not only to my fans, also Cher Lloyd because we did this song together and she’s amazing,” she said. “Instead of just getting up here and saying a speech, each one of you deserves to live a happy and healthy, incredible life.”

The Fault In Our Stars wins big:

Continuing its success as one of the best movies to come out this summer, the stars of The Fault in Our Stars won several awards last night including “Choice Movie Actor, Drama” and “Breakout Movie Star” for Ansel Elgort and “Choice Drama” and “Choice Action” movie actress for Divergent‘s Shailene Woodley. The pair, who played teen cancer patients who fall in love in TFIOS, were also awarded a surfboard trophy for “Choice Movie Liplock” for their smooch in the film.

Stunned about the wins, Elgort said, “I don’t surf or anything, so I guess I’m gonna put this on my wall.”

What a dork!

Tyler Posey reunites with former onscreen mom Jennifer Lopez

Before Tyler Posey was stealing hearts on Teen Wolf, he was probably most known for playing Jennifer Lopez’s adorable son in Maid in Manhattan. Now all grown up, the Teen Choice Award co-host had quite the reunion with the singer last night as he shared the stage with his former onscreen mother.

However, he had other plans.

“I know we haven’t seen each other since ‘Maid In Manhattan’ forever ago, but I thought that if you needed a backup dancer, I’d fit.”

Showing off his dance moves, we were uhm…a little less than impressed. Stick to your day job, Tyler!!

While the boys from 5 Seconds of Summer couldn’t make it to the awards, they didn’t leave fans disappointed. Accepting surfboards for “Breakout Group” and “Choice Summer, Music Group”, members Michael, Luke, Calum and Ashton still managed to make the audience scream as they showed up wearing nothing but a towel around their waists in their video speech.

“We’re terribly sorry we couldn’t be there tonight. But we wanted to say a big thank you to our fans for voting for us for “Break Out Group” and “Group of the Summer,” the boys said. “Thank you to Teen Choice Awards for letting us record this video. And basically thank you to every single fan that’s ever done anything at all for us. We love you guys so much, and basically we are on tour at the moment, in the shower. We’re together for a surf now. Right now. We are trying to surf. We’ll see you guys soon.”

Selena Gomez wins the Ultimate Choice Award:

No one was more emotional than Selena Gomez last night, who took home the biggest prize of the night winning the “Ultimate Choice Award.” At 22 years old, she became the youngest recipient to win the prize, which honoured her for her work in film, television and music.

“Thank you so much! I have to be honest—especially this month—I cannot thank you guys enough. You remind me, amidst all the stuff that we deal with personally, what’s important, and that’s giving and loving and caring about each other,” she said.

In her sentimental speech, Gomez also thanked her mother, Mandy Teefy, for her continuous support.

“I want to thank my mom so much because she’s the greatest human being in the world, and she’s strong and she’s given up her life for me. She’s so beautiful,” she continued. She’s incredible. This never belongs to me. This only goes to you. Thank you for letting me do what I love.”
