ANDPOP wants to help you stun your family and friends with your utterly amazing musical taste. Gabriella Zicarelli will profile a new musical act for you to enjoy on a weekly basis. This week, we put the spotlight on The 1975.

Once you take a listen to their infectious sound, you can almost immediately start to understand why Manchester, England’s The 1975 have quickly found their way into our hearts.

Comprised of singer Matt Healy, drummer George Daniel , guitarist/keyboardist Adam Hann  and bassist Ross MacDonald, The 1975 are yet one more Brit group we’ve added to our iTunes library. Their tunes can easily be described as incredibly addictive in the best way possible.

The foursome released their self-titled debut album last year and have already won over some notable attention thanks to their pop and rock infused electronic sound. The album went on to debut at number one on the U.K. Album Chart and produced a number of hits, including the pop-driven “Girls” and super catchy “The City.”

“The City” was actually the band’s first single off their 2012 EP, Facedown. It was their first successful shot at earning radio play in the U.K. The title track off their second EP Sex found similar success after it was released in November 2012. BBC Radio 1 gave The 1975 massive praise, helping them gain a fan following afterwards. Their radio success would eventually see them through a tour through the U.K. and Ireland and their first American tour in the spring 2013. The EPs Music for Cars and IV were also released that year.

What especially stands out about The 1975 (and part of the reason we love them so much) is that whether they’re naming A$AP Rocky’s Long Live A$AP their favourite album of last year or proclaiming their love for Michael Jackson, they manage to avoid confining themselves or their music to one particular genre.

Most recently, while discussing the writing process for the second album, Matt shared how much of the upcoming record will be greatly influenced by one of our favourite boybands of the 90’s, the Backstreet Boys. Why? Because, according to Matt, BSB are “f**king awesome.” Yes Matty, we know exactly how you feel about BSB and we couldn’t agree more.

The band is currently spending their summer playing festivals all over the world, including Singapore, Australia, America, Japan and the UK. They will then head out on a headlining tour in the fall, where they’ll hit Europe and North America, with two sold out shows in both Toronto and Vancouver.

Whether they’re singing R&B, rock or letting their love of pop music shine, it really makes no difference what genre these guys are singing because they manage to make it all sound effortlessly stunning. There’s no doubt that the second album is one that is highly anticipated and we clearly can’t wait to hear what else this Manchester based band has to offer.
