Vintage Photo of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson As The Sunshine Boy Resurfaces
It’s the epitome of good-boy-trying-to-be-bad 90’s fashion.
The Sun newspaper chain in Canada has a longstanding tradition of featuring good-looking women in their pages under the banner of “Sunshine Girl” week after week. They even had a “Sunshine Boy” feature for those who didn’t mind looking at black-and-white photos of hot guys. That was sadly discontinued in 2006.
Fortunately, the axe was brought down on the weekly column years after the one and only Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was featured as “The Sunshine Boy” back in 1997.
Yes, that’s right: The Rock was a Sunshine Boy in the nineties.
Then known as “Rocky,” the highly sought after gig involved a baggy black turtleneck, a small chain, dad jeans, a bad haircut and a FANNY PACK. It is the epitome of good-boy-trying-to-be-bad 90’s fashion.
At the time of publication, the up-and-coming wrestler told the publication that he wanted “to live a happy life and would like to be one of the leading stars of the WWE. He has cats named Jackson and Miss Kitty, loves to fish and fly airplanes.” He also mentioned that he loves to relax on the beach and Phantom of the Opera was his favourite stage show.
“That’s right, I remember,” he told the Toronto Sun when he was in town to help promote his upcoming action film, Hercules. “Oh my gosh! It had to have been ’96 or ’97. The fanny bag… I would like to, like, post that picture and tell everybody, ‘Look how far I’ve come’… It’s great looking back on those days.”
And he has indeed come so far. The star managed to turn his successful WWE wrestling run into a full-fledged action movie career. He has since nabbed roles in the Fast and the Furious franchise and the successful Mummy franchise (including his own spin-off movie, The Scorpion King).
His latest movie, Hercules, will hit theatres on Friday.
