Ed Sheeran Tops BBC 1Xtra’s List As The Most Important Act in Black and Urban Music

Ed Sheeran

We love Ed Sheeran as much as the next person, but this list has us a little baffled.

BBC Radio 1Xtra, labelled “the UK’s leading black music station,” released their list of the “most important UK artists” in the black and urban music scene last Friday in which the ginger singer topped the list.

Rounding out the top four were two other white artists: electronic music duo Disclosure at number two and singer Sam Smith at number four. Rapper Tinie Tempah was the highest-placed black artist in third.

But while we can all agree that Sheeran has been heavily influenced by the hip hop and grime scenes of the UK, his number one placement on BBC 1Xtra’s list was surely met with some criticism. Rapper Wiley, who was 16th on the list, took to Twitter to comment about the rankings:

Like Wiley, we do agree that Ed “is sick.”  However, we aren’t going to lie and say we didn’t scratch our heads on this one.

That being said though, a BBC spokesman has since released this statement, explaining what factors went in on creating the top 20 list:

“Artists were considered on variables such as sales statistics, quality of music and impact across the wider industry – it is not about the colour of someone’s skin.”

Well, alright then.
