10 Ed Sheeran Covers You Should Listen To

Posted on July 9, 2014 by
Ed Sheeran performing

Ed Sheeran is a multi-talented musician who can sing, play the guitar, beat box and use a loop pedal. Whether it’s a pub or a sold-out stadium, there’s no denying that this 23-year-old British singer-songwriter can make his music sound good anywhere.

Though as much as we love Ed’s honest and heartfelt songs, what also makes him stand out is his ability to make any hit single - be it Sam Smith, 5 Seconds of Summer or Nina Simone – sound like his own. Whether he’s singing a capella or collaborating with a fellow musician, Ed can never go wrong whenever he’s covering a song.

Here are 10 of our favourite Ed Sheeran covers!

Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’

Here’s a cover that will leave you feeling hot and bothered.

The best part is when he says, “Cool” at the end, as if he didn’t just make a bunch of ladies (and men) melt in their seats.

Frank Ocean’s ‘Swim Good’

Paying tribute to one of the best R&B singers at the moment, Sheeran gives us one underrated cover of Frank Ocean’s ‘Swim Good.’ We also love seeing Ed wearing glasses because he looks adorable in them. PLEASE WEAR THEM MORE OFTEN.

Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’

While we love Sam Smith’s original version of ‘Stay With Me’, Sheeran certainly gives his fellow British singer-songwriter a run for his money with his own rendition.

But that being said, it’s all love between the two as Sheeran has previously noted Smith’s song is one of his favourites. “I think it’s an instant classic. It’s gonna be around for a long time. [Sam Smith] is gonna be around for a long time, as well.”

Beyoncé’s ‘Drunk in Love’

Although we still can’t get enough of Beyoncé’s ‘Drunk in Love’, Sheeran manages to make the song sound like his own by making it less raunchy and more romantic.

5 Seconds of Summer’s ‘She Looks So Perfect’

For an unrehearsed cover, this is very, very good. Like ‘Drunk in Love’, Ed makes the song sound more like a love ballad than a heavy hitting pop song. *Sigh*

Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’

Several rookie guitar players count Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ as one of the first songs they learned how to play. With Ed’s rendition sounding so smooth and perfect, let this cover serve as an inspiration for aspiring guitarists.

‘Wayfaring Stranger’

For a song that goes way back to the early 19th century, Ed’s rendition of this folk tune is extremely modern. Through changing the lyrics, beat boxing and using a loop pedal, we love how he gets creative to make this song sound like his very own.

Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ Thrift Shop’  Mash-up feat. Passenger

What do you get when you put Ed Sheeran and Passenger together? This epic mash-up, of course! Through mixing Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’  and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s ‘Thrift Shop’ together, the two singers create some musical magic for our ears.

Nina Simone’s ‘Be My Husband’

While it may be just a tad awkward to hear Ed singing for his daddy to “love me good,” there’s no denying that his Nina Simone covers are absolutely perfect. With nothing but a guitar and a loop pedal, he also manages to make his one-man performance sound like he has a band backing him up.

Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’

In yet another Nina Simone cover, Ed gives us all sorts of emotions with his rendition of “Feeling Good.” Sexy, sly with just a hint of charm, Ed really makes us “feel good” listening to him sing this cover. ;)
