ANDPOP wants to help you stun your family and friends with your utterly amazing musical taste. Gabriella Zicarelli will profile a new musical act for you to enjoy on a weekly basis. With his latest album release, it’s only fitting we talk about Ed Sheeran.
Raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, Ed Sheeran has been making music since he was 14. He recorded and released his first independent EP The Orange Room in 2005 and has been winning over adoring fans ever since.
He later made the move to London in 2008, where he played local gigs and released his second EP You Need Me in 2009. His career really took off after British rapper Example invited him on tour. He then released his third EP, Loose Change, which featured his breakout hit, “The A Team,” a song he wrote after meeting a young prostitute at a local shelter.
With his success, Ed has also become quite the philanthropist. Having shown his support for a number of different charities, including those that help sex workers. He’s lent his voice and time to help raise £40,000 for the charity One25, which reaches out to sex workers.
In 2010, the then 19-year-old Ed decided to chase the “American Dream” and bought a ticket to Los Angeles. It was there that he nabbed the attention of actor-singer Jamie Foxx. Foxx was so impressed by the Ginger One’s talents that he even offered Ed the chance to record in his personal recording studio in Hollywood.
After earning some major exposure on YouTube and through the papers, his fan base of Sheerios rapidly grew to finally include Elton John himself. He and Elton would later collaborate for a performance of “The A Team” at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
Ed has since collaborated with and toured with BFF Taylor Swift, worked with Pharrell Williams on Ed’s latest album X, and has written songs for countless of singers, including One Direction (“Moments” “Little Things” and “Over Again”). He’s also contributed material to two movies: “I See Fire” for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and “All of the Stars” for The Fault in our Stars. Ed will soon embark on a major headlining tour beginning this fall in support of his sophomore album.
Whether he’s singing about going to the beach, carving a heart out a pebble in “Wake Me Up,” partying with a talking cat in his music video for “Drunk,” or even making us want to cry with “Small Bump,” there’s no denying that it’s impossible to not fall in love with the immense talent that is Ed Sheeran.
Plus, we also really enjoy when he posts pictures with his new rescue kitty Graham.
