“This is one hell of a way to make a friend,” said one man just moments after he and the stranger across from him stopped slapping each other in the face.
And yes, yes it was.
The pair were only two of the people in the long list of strangers recruited by director Max Landis to hit each other in the face for the video, “The Slap.”
The video and concept is similar to the “First Kiss” video and fashion ad campaign which went viral earlier this year. But instead of asking them to kiss, each individual was asked to slap the random stranger for the first time.
The cast includes a number of familiar faces including former child star Haley Joel Osment (HE’S SO BEARDY), Victorious’ Matt Bennett and Liz Gillies, Amanda Crew from HBO’s Silicon Valley, and 90210’s Jessica Stroup and Dustin Milligan.
“‘The Kiss’ video that came out a couple months ago was interesting, and there are a lot of parodies of it, but this is not a parody.” explains Landis in another video. “It’s sort of an experiment. The idea is to put two people in front of a camera, and refuse to interact with them, there’s nowhere for them to hide; they’re directing each other.”
“They immediately establish a rapport,” he says. “To a small degree, they’re united against the camera. We’re almost the antagonists.”
“A slap mitigated by permission is a hug.”
The resulting video is actual quite fun to watch though we were half-expecting How I Met Your Mother’s Jason Segel to appear out of nowhere to slap Neil Patrick Harris for a bonus slap in the slap bet. Alas, it just wasn’t the happy ending we got.
