Shake It Up star Zendaya is set take on the lead role in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B.
Based on the biography Aaliyah: More Than A Woman by former TIME editor Christopher Farley, the multitalented 17-year-old will step into the shoes of late R&B artist Aaliyah who died in a plane crash back in 2001.
The made-for-TV movie will follow Aaliyah’s rise-to-fame, according to Variety.
Aaliyah first got her start in after she appeared on the talent show Star Search at the age of 10. Her two albums, One In A Million and Aaliyah, and the posthumous release I Care 4 U have sold millions of albums.
Ever since her tragic death at the age of 22, the entertainment continues to be fascinated with the late singer’s life. In fact, Toronto-based rapper Drake was working on pulling together another posthumous album using unused Aaliyah vocal tracks. He even released a “duet” called “Enough Said.”
The Aaliyah biopic will be filmed this summer and is scheduled to premiere in the fall.
For those who can’t wait, Fans can check out Zendaya’s acting chops in old reruns of her hit Disney show Shake It Up and Dancing With The Stars (she was on its 16th season and was a runner-up). Zendaya will also star in the upcoming Disney Channel movie Zapped and the new Disney series K.C. Undercover, which she is also producing.
Here’s to hoping this will be better than the Lindsay Lohan-fronted Liz & Dick, Lifetime’s made-for-TV Elizabeth Taylor bio-pic.
