When it comes to Harvard Law, Mindy Kaling isn’t exactly the first person to come to mind when it comes to giving a graduation speech. But with her wit, charm and inspiring words, she proved earlier this week that she’s EXACTLY what all graduates want to hear during their convocation.
Kaling was the featured speaker at a Class Day ceremony for Harvard Law’s best and brightest students. And while she found out during her speech that she wasn’t getting an honourary degree, The Mindy Project star still killed her speech which included jokes about her alma mater Dartmouth and shout-outs to an Indian-American who was honoured earlier during the day. In fact, she even hit on a prof named Noah Feldman, which is kind of creepy…but very Kelly Kapoor (her character in The Office).
Here’s one particularly funny and inspiring passage from her speech:
“And now, with this diploma in hand, most of you will go on to the noblest pursuits, like helping a cable company acquire a telecom company. You will defend BP from birds. You will spend hours arguing that the well water was contaminated well before the fracking occurred. One of you will sort out the details of my pre-nup. A dozen of you will help me with my acrimonious divorce. And one of you will fall in love in the process. I’m talking to you, Noah Feldman!”
Seeing that I am about to graduate very soon, I can’t lie and say that I’m not jealous of Harvard’s graduating class. What a treat! I swear that this is almost better than the time Ryan Gosling attended his mother’s convocation last year.
But whether a celebrity shows up or not at your graduation, you should be proud of your achievements. Congrats class of 2014! You did it!
