Liam Payne Responds to Recent Criticism Towards One Direction

Posted on May 31, 2014 by

Amid the bad press One Direction has been getting lately, One Direction’s Liam Payne has taken to Twitter to respond to a Daily Mail article commenting on a recently leaked video featuring members of the group smoking a joint.

The article, written by columnist Jan Moir, questions whether the band has been faithful to their fan base. Noting how the band was formed by Simon Cowell in 2010, she criticizes the band for taking fame for granted.

Here’s an excerpt from the piece:

“One Direction are the biggest-selling group in the world. And their rise to the top has been cynical and exploitative, even by grasping music industry standards.

“In the tuck shop of pop, bands don’t come any more manufactured. They were put together in 2010 by Simon Cowell from a bunch of X Factor rejects, and from then till now the members have done very little to improve their musicianship, to learn a musical instrument or even write a song.

Like so many before them, they take fame for granted, raking in the cash and feeling it will never end.

Some people sneer and say ‘pop star takes drugs’ — what is the big deal? Actually, in this instance, it is a big deal. Surely Louis and Zayn should be more responsible towards their impressionable fan-base.”

Feeling that the article was unfair, it was Payne who spoke out and defended his friends and fellow bandmates.

Personally, I completely agree with Liam’s little rant. Yes, the ganja smoking may be a bit of a nightmare for One Direction’s press, but you can’t really expect the boys to be perfect, right?

While I may not completely agree with the boys’ use of the n-word, I think Liam handled this very maturely.

Perhaps the boys can have a heart to heart with Justin Bieber? Because God knows, the press hasn’t been too kind to him either.
