Whether you have a date for prom or have decided to go with a close group of friends, you still want to dress to impress. The problem: the big night is just a few weeks away and you’ve been a) too lazy to find a dress and/or, b) carefully saving up all your dollar bills.
Lucky for you, we’re experts in thrifty dressing so here are some tips on how you can score the prefect prom dress in time and on a dime.
1. .Beg / Borrow
The first two rules of trying to do anything on a budget are to beg, borrow and steal. We’re not into committing crimes so hopefully you won’t have to do the latter or much of the former to score a dress from your pals.
Just like good boy advice, your friends should be your go-to when it comes to dress hunting, but it’s not just their opinion you should be after. A good friend should always give you open access to their overflowing closets. Are they still in love with that dress they wore to their cousin’s wedding? What about that semi-formal dress they wore earlier this year? It would be shame to leave it at the back of the closet without letting it see the light of day again.
Dress swaps are probably the best way to wear new without breaking the bank. You get the same kind of shopping experience (new things are always exciting) but without the overwhelming choice selection. Just remember to set some ground rules with your besties before you open the doors: what outfits are absolutely off-limits? What kind of alterations are they okay with (i.e. raising the hemlines, getting it taken in, etc.)?
Don’t forget to be a pal back and let them step into your esteemed wardrobe.
Do you and your friend have different tastes or dress sizes? Hoping to score a designer dud but don’t have the cash to throw away? Fear not as there are a number of great companies that’ll let you rent a dress for the night.
From Anna Sui to Jill Stuart, Rent Frock Repeat carries a number of designer labels and stylish gowns for a perfect night out. You can even see how soon each dress can be shipped out to you. Bonus: they’ll even let you pick a back-up size to ensure you receive a dress that fits!
Thanks to fast fashion, purchasing a pretty prom dress for a low price is easy these days and there’s really no shame in it! Just take a look at the likes of models Kendall Jenner and Jourdan Dunn who wore gowns from Topshop the MET Ball this year. Topshop!
Some great places you should hit up are Topshop (make sure to check out some of the cocktail dresses model Kate Moss helped design), ASOS (international shipping), and Nasty Gal. Just make sure to check their return policies, especially when it comes to ordering dresses online.
By this time, the sale rack should also be fairly stocked up with discounted gowns. Just remember that it’s much easier to take in a dress you like than it is to have it let us. In other words, if you’re stuck between sizes, size up and bring it to a tailor.
