ANDPOP wants to help you stun your family and friends with your utterly amazing musical taste. Gabriella Zicarelli will profile a new musical act for you to enjoy on a regular basis. This week, it’s all about our favourite quartet from Down Under, 5 Seconds of Summer.

What started out as just uploading covers on YouTube for fun turned out to be just the outlet needed to jump start 5 Seconds of Summer’s music career.

It all began back in 2011 when Australia’s Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Luke Hemmings uploaded acoustic covers of songs like Mike Posner’s “Please Don’t Go” and Chris Brown’s “Next To You” on the video streaming site. They they tacked on dimpled cutie, drummer Ashton Irwin, onto their roster to finally form 5 Seconds of Summer.

After racking up huge view numbers, their internet covers won the lads a record deal. They they went on to release their first EP, Unplugged, which took the number three spot on iTunes in Australia and hit the Top 20 charts in New Zealand.

What really helped to catapult this four-piece pop-punk band in super-stardom was some receiving some love from One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson. The 1D member shared links to 5SOS covers with his millions of Twitter followers. His love for the Aussie band was so infectious that One Direction eventually recruited the band to open for them on their Take Me Home tour last year.

But that’s not all: 5SOS’s charm has helped the band to sell out every show on their recent North America tour.Let’s also not forget that their latest single, the title track from their She Looks So Perfect EP, has been garnering ample radio time and even peaked at number one on the U.K. singles chart. The boys are currently gearing up for the release of their self-titled debut album (out July 22 in North America) and will rejoin One Direction for the North American, U.K. and European legs of the boy band’s current Where We Are stadium tour. This means fans will be privy to moments like this:

While they might’ve gotten a well-deserved push from the world’s biggest boy band, let’s not be quick to label 5SOS as “another boy band.” These Aussies deliver more of a pop-punk feel reminiscent of bands Simple Plan and All Time Low. It shouldn’t be surprising as they’ve cited Green Day and Blink 182 as influences.

Ultimately, Luke, Michael, Calum and Ashton have brought new life to the pop-punk genre and with some pretty big names backing them up, 5 Seconds of Summer will undoubtedly continue their rise on the charts.

5 Seconds of Summer’s self-titled debut album is set to drop July 22 in North America and is available for pre-order on iTunes now!
