ANDPOP wants to help you stun your family and friends with your utterly amazing musical taste. ANDPOP’s Gabriella Zicarelli will profile a new musical act for you to enjoy on a weekly basis. This week, her ears can’t get enough of the U.K.’s Sam Smith.
Sam Smith was just a regular 18-year-old kid working at a local bar in London when he was tapped by the equally baby-faced electro-dance pop duo Disclosure to lend his voice for their first single. That single ended up becoming “Latch,” the song that would lead all parties onto the road towards becoming bonafide artists.
After collaborating with a number of notable artists (including Naughty Boy for the rapper’s track “La La La” and Nile Rodgers’ “Together”), the 21-year-old is striking out on his own.
He’s made a huge splash in recent months for the melancholic single, “Stay With Me.” The sad song about loneliness sounds as if a part of Adele’s spirit entered his soul to help fill the male diva gap. Smith delivers a cool, suave vibe that’s refreshing to the ears all while showcasing his unique personal personal style: a modern twist on the British Teddy Boy. It’s not often we see a 21 year-old in a classy sports jacket during a performance and quite frankly, it’s…
He’s already made his late night show rounds with performances on Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Smith has even sold out shows in Europe and North America before his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, has even dropped (it’s out June 17).
Needless to say, with his perfectly styled pompadour hair, stellar falsettos and lyrics like “The Night, this emptiness / this hole that I’m inside” we can’t help but to swoon over this amazing talent who has a voice as smooth as a red velvet cupcake.
